This Hospitality painting is the 10th painting in the series (not yet completed) of paintings in my collection called, Complexity: The Puzzle of Discipleship. This series explores a lot of complexities faced by modern-day disciples. These paintings accompany the book I'm writing with the same title.
Here is a snippet of the chapter on hospitality: 'I always viewed myself as very hospitable. I love cooking for people and having people around. I’m always glad to have my friends’ round and my children’s friends’ round. However, in the past couple of years my mental health recovery has meant that I’ve struggled to keep my house clean and tidy (even more so than previously!). That sparks a lot of shame in me. Then there was the global pandemic which meant that I couldn't have people round either... It seems to me, though, that hospitality goes deeper than inviting people round to a nice clean and tidy house.' (© Hannah Kirk, 2021)
