I used blue to represent 'negative' emotions and green to represent 'positive' emotions. The black thick lines represent caverns or depths of despair. The pattern of up and down represents the ups and downs of life and our emotions.

I painted this using acrylics on stretched canvas. The painting accompanies the final chapter in my book, Complexity: The Puzzle of Discipleship.

Here is a snippet from the chapter on Z for EmotionZ:

"Emotions spelt with a 'z' was not because I couldn't think of another word relevant that begins with the letter 'z'. Zeal was one, but as I said in the introduction God commissioned this book and gave me the chapter titles way back in 2018. My emotions can sometimes be seen as problematic, largely due to the disorders I am recovering from. I have read many books on this subject and will list them at the end of the chapter in the suggested reading section. Before we delve deeper into this area of complexity, I want us to read a portion of Scripture, 'Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound to us, even so our comfort also abounds through Christ. But if we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation. If we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you the patient enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer. Our hope for you is steadfast, knowing that, since you are partakers of the sufferings, so also are you of the comfort.' - 2 Corinthians 1:3-7 (NHEB). I chose this portion of Scripture because of the hope it brings. Through the Living God, we have all the comfort we need to face any situation and any emotion." (© Hannah Kirk, 2022)
