With Mother’s Day fast approaching I wanted to write some of my reflections about motherhood. We all have someone who gave birth to us, that may or may not be our mother. The relationship with our mother may or may not be a good one. Our mothers might not live locally to us, or might have died. I’m blessed that I have a good-enough relationship with my mum and that she is still alive.

I’m so blessed because I am a mother to two daughters. The challenges of parenting are small compared to the blessing of having children, or at least from my perspective. I see the pain caused when people can’t have children, the pain of losing a child (of any age) and I’m thankful that I have children and that they are still alive.

I’m blessed to have a good-enough relationship with my children (one of whom is almost an adult).

This year (2022) Mother’s Day falls on 27th March, which is also my wedding anniversary. It was going to be a double celebration, but I found out last week that I will be having an operation on my foot on the 28th March and so will need to self-isolate for a few days before then. That has meant that I won’t be able to see my mother, or my mother-in-law, and my children can only see me from a safe distance. We’ve decided to get a takeaway which I will eat alone upstairs, but as a form of celebration for our wedding anniversary and for Mother’s Day.

When I was growing up the children at the local church were given little bunches of daffodils to give to our mums. Did you do that? As I got older I started to buy my own gifts for my mum, and later on for my mother-in-law.

During the lockdowns for the Covid pandemic, I really hated that I couldn’t visit my mum and give her a hug. That is the most precious gift – hugging. I can’t think of anything better – not even chocolate! So, this weekend, when I am not allowed to hug my family, I’m going to find that a real struggle. I love that my children both love hugs and they will struggle too.
